Checklist: Hire a Freelance MERN Stack Developer Who Ships Revenue

The wrong freelance partnership costs more than the invoice — it slows down launches, leaks data, and burns your marketing budget. Follow this 10-point checklist to vet your next MERN stack developer before you sign.

By Aniket Kushwaha — Freelance MERN Stack & Full-Stack Engineer

1. Does the developer own product outcomes, not just tickets?

Ask for case studies that reference business metrics: MRR growth, conversion lifts, churn reduction. A senior MERN partner should show how their React and Node.js delivery moved a North Star metric, not just ship features.

2. Can they architect scalable React + Node foundations?

Request a whiteboard session. Look for thoughtful choices around state management, routing, caching layers, database indexes, and horizontal scaling strategies on MongoDB or Postgres.

3. What is their DevOps & deployment strategy?

Production work demands branching policies, CI/CD, monitoring, and rollbacks. Clarify which tools they bring (GitHub Actions, Netlify, AWS, Render) and how they protect your uptime.

4. Do they speak product with founders?

Founders need weekly demos, roadmap clarity, and concise documentation. Your developer should translate complex constraints into simple trade-offs and proposals.

5. Security, privacy, and compliance basics are non-negotiable.

Review their approach to encryption, secret management, role-based access, and logging. Even if you are pre-compliance, you must plan for audits.

6. Can they integrate payments, messaging, analytics the right way?

7. Ask for a delivery guarantee.

Senior freelancers will commit to sprint goals, share transparent progress boards, and outline escalation procedures.

8. Validate documentation and handover processes.

You need onboarding docs, ADRs, environment variables, and runbooks so future teams can keep shipping without knowledge gaps.

9. Check availability and communication cadence.

Clarify time zones, overlap windows, meeting cadence, and preferred channels. Clear communication beats heroics every time.

10. Confirm post-launch support.

Even the cleanest releases need warranty windows. Align on SLAs, bug-fix policies, and optional retainers before launch.
